How to Choose a Bariatric Surgeon

How to Choose a Bariatric Surgeon

Deciding how to choose a bariatric surgeon can be difficult.  This can be especially tough when considering having the procedure performed overseas.  To help our weight loss surgery patients make this decision we advocate that any patient consider the following questions in their decision making process.

How Many Bariatric Surgeries Has the Surgeon Performed?
Experience is one of the most important factors in achieving a good outcome. For this reason it is advised to seek out bariatric surgery centers of excellence. It has been shown in studies that when a surgeon has performed more weight loss surgery procedures the incidence of complications is reduced. In general it is considered that 100 procedures is a minimum level of experience.

What Type of Bariatric Surgeries does the Surgeon Perform?
Within the classification of bariatric surgery, there are a number of different procedures, such as gastric bypass, gastric banding (lap band), or a gastric sleeve. Talk to your doctor and determine which of these procedures is best for you. And, when you have made this decision, ask how many of this specific procedure they have performed.

Does the Surgeon have Board Certification?
Make sure to check what certifications the surgeon has. Board certification allows for an independent review of a surgeon and ensures they meet specified standards that are widely recognized.

Is the Surgeon a Member of International Societies?
The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is a world-recognized institution of highly qualified bariatric surgeons. It is recommended to choose a bariatric surgeon from among these members.

Where Will the Operation be Performed?
In order to achieve bariatric surgery center of excellence designation, a hospital must have performed over 125 successful procedures. In addition, the operating surgeon must meet this same criteria. Furthermore, a full bariatric team must be on hand and available.

What are the Risks Associated with Weight Loss Surgery?
All surgical procedures involve risk. Make sure to ask your surgeon what risks are associated with your operation, especially if there are ones that are more prevalent given your situation.

Who Else Will be Assisting in the Operation?
Weight loss surgery involves a team of specialists. To ensure you are going with a bariatric surgery center of excellence, ask about the experience of the whole team. This includes assisting surgeons and anesthesiologists.

Will There be Support Post-Procedure?
Bariatric surgery involves a lifestyle change for the patient. Ask about post-procedure support programs to ensure you will be taken care of throughout the whole process.
