Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery - commonly known as weight loss surgery or obesity surgery, is a category of procedures designed to surgically treat obesity, and to compliment a weight-loss program of proper nutrition and exercise. This is done through the modification of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract with the purpose of reducing food intake and nutrient absorption. Typically bariatric surgery is an option for those who have been unable to achieve weight loss through dieting and exercise. Consult with one of our doctors to see if you are a candidate for weight loss surgery. We will guide you towards a healthier and fuller life.

Who Should Get Bariatric Surgery
The American College of Physicians issued guidelines detailing who is a candidate for this type of weight loss surgery. The recommendation was that patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40+, or who have tried and failed using diet and exercise programs, or those who have a combination of various co-morbidities, are good prospects for this procedure. Other important considerations are that the patient should consult with the doctor regarding long-term side-effects and that “patients should be referred to high-volume centers with surgeons experienced in bariatric surgery.” Our Surgery for Obesity group in Bogota and greater Colombia has perfomed 5,000 succesfull bariatric surgeries, to ensure you a safe an effective approach to your battle with obesity.

Types of Bariatric Surgery:
Weight loss surgery is classified into three general categories: malabsorptive procedures, restrictive procedures, or a combination of the two. The object of malabsorptive procedures, while they do reduce the stomach size, is primarily to reduce the absorption of fats, sugars and other damaging elements from food. Restrictive procedures, on the other hand, are intended to minimize the consumption of food to induce weight loss. Make sure to consult with one of our surgeons to see which type of weight loss surgery is best for you.

Effectiveness of Bariatric Surgery
For those with morbid obesity, surgery is typically the recommended course of treatment. Within the types of weight loss surgery, malabsorptive procedures generally lead to a little more total weight loss over time. At 36 months, the average range of weight loss varies from 70-117 pounds (32-53 Kg).
